Harvest Season Moon

The third month that is agriculturally named is takwaakikiilhswa ‘Harvest Season Moon’. As the name says, it is the harvest season month. However, it is not our final harvest, but the first main harvest of the year—the harvest of green corn. Green corn is corn in its milk stage and can be eaten raw; it also makes a very tasty roasted ear of corn. One of the indicators for the green corn stage is the cornsilk beginning to dry out and becoming brown. Takwaakikiilhswa is also the time of year when lenasooki ‘bison (plural)’ are in rut (breeding season).
