The month of Tahkinkamiaahkwa Kiilhswa, ‘Cold Water Moon,’ is named for the cold water that comes from groundwater springs at this time of year. These springs form when melting ice and snow seep into the ground and then flow out into nearby streams and rivers. This month also marks the beginning of the transitional period of meeloohkamiki, ‘it is spring,’ between the seasons of peepoonki, ‘it is winter,’ and neepinwiki, ‘it is summer.’
