Practice & Play

At the Peoria Table

Try this short routine at the table or wherever you eat or drink using the Peoria words for kitchen and eating items on this page. You do not need a partner — just yourself, your voice, and the things you are using, but it is even better if family or friends are nearby. Go slowly; there is no need to rush. If you are new, start with Steps 1 to 4 for this table routine. When you are ready for the next part of your journey, you can add Step 5.

Choose Your Peoria Table Words.

Look at the Peoria words on this page for things you use at the table, like cup, plate, bowl, spoon, fork, napkin, or food. Choose 3 to 5 items that are in front of you now or that you use often when you eat or drink. Say each Peoria word slowly 3 times before you begin your meal, so your voice and your ears get used to the sounds. For example, you can say minehkwaakani, minehkwaakani, minehkwaakani    — cup, cup, cup.

Point and Say Before You Use It.

As you sit at the table, point with an open hand, your head, or your lips (not your finger) to one item at a time right before you use it and say the Peoria word for that item 3 times out loud. Do this for things like your cup, plate, bowl, spoon, fork, or napkin. Use the Peoria table words you chose in Step 1. For example, you can point to your plate and say šinkilaakani, šinkilaakani, šinkilaakani  — plate, plate, plate.

Pick It Up and Say the Peoria Word Out Loud.

When you pick something up to use it, like your cup, spoon, or fork, hold it in your hand and say the Peoria word for that item 1 to 3 times out loud. You can do this right before you take a drink, a bite of food, or wipe your mouth with a napkin. Let your voice be steady and clear, as if you are teaching the word to someone sitting with you. For example, when you pick up your spoon, you can say kookaani, kookaani, kookaani  — spoon, spoon, spoon. When you reach for the salt or pepper, do not forget to say wiihkapeepiikwi   for salt and wiihsakaakani   for pepper when you use them or pass them to someone at the table. You can also make a small rule at your table that before someone receives the salt, pepper, or another item, they say the Peoria word for it first.

Say a Small Row of Table Words.

At a quiet moment during the meal or right after you finish eating, look at the things on the table in front of you. Pick up or point to 3 or 4 items in a row and say the Peoria word for each one, one after another. For example, you can pick up your cup, plate, fork, and knife and say minehkwaakani, šinkilaakani, neewikoleeki, maalhsi  — cup, plate, fork, knife. If you are eating with others, you can say the Peoria words and let them guess which thing you will pick up next.

Draw and Use a Simple Peoria Table Mat.

Later in the day, or the next time you are with a child or another learner, draw a simple outline of a table setting on a piece of paper. Draw the outline of a plate and, if you like, a bowl sitting inside the plate outline, and also draw a cup, fork, knife, and spoon. Write the Peoria word inside each outline instead of the English word — for example, write šinkilaakani  near the top of the plate shape and nipoopilaakani  inside the bowl shape, and write minehkwaakani  inside the cup shape. When you set the table, place each real item on top of its outline and say the Peoria word as you put it down, and point to or touch it as you say the word again. You can color the outlines together and, if you like, laminate the paper and use it as a place mat or place holder for teaching Peoria table words. When it is not on the table, keep this drawing near your table or on the fridge and use it as a reminder to say your Peoria table words each time you eat or drink.

Try this table routine again at another meal with some of the same items and some new ones so words like minehkwaakani, šinkilaakani, kookaani, and maalhsi become part of how you eat, how you teach your children, and how you share time with family and friends. If you want, make a simple family table rule to say the Peoria word first when you ask for, pass, or use table items, and then build from there little by little.
